The aim of this article is to commemorate the life and work of Prof. Marian Nowak, one of the most important representatives of general and personalist pedagogy, and to analyze selected aspectsof his scholarship, as well as to reconstruct hisconcept of upbringing. The studyfocuses on the following research question: What is Prof. Nowak’s concept of upbringing? The analysis is based on a critical examination of selected source texts under the framework of Prof. Nowak’s personalist paradigm of education.
To characterize Prof. Nowak’s understanding of upbringing, it is necessary to outline its anthropological foundations centred on personalism. With regard to the process of upbringing, it should be noted that, according to Prof. Nowak, it involves maintaining a specific balance between nature, culture, and transcendence. Equally evident is the axiological basis of education, which draws inspiration from Christianity. Given the relational nature of upbringing, it is also important to take into account the participants involved in the process. The child is the primary subject of upbringing, while the educator, understood in the broadest sense, acts as a companion and a source of stimuli for the child’s activity.
In discussing Prof. Nowak’s concept of upbringing, it is worth emphasizing that his work was characterized not only by fidelity to Christian inspiration but also by methodological clarity and openness to scholarly dialogue.
