The problem presented in the article concerns the uniqueness of the upbringing process in terms of respecting the degree and scope of freedom of people who, like children, do not yet have sufficient abilities to make the right decisions and to bear their full consequenc-es. The elementary ways of understanding freedom (positive freedom, negative freedom and internal freedom) were analyzed in terms of their importance for understanding the freedom–security dilemma in upbringing. The arguments for the need to consider the dual role of freedom in the structure of the upbringing process were presented. First of all, freedom is an essential goal of upbringing, and secondly, it is a tool without which it would be impossible to achieve the higher goals of upbringing (intellectual and moral autonomy).
