The article presents results of action research carried out in a middle school located in a small town of central Poland. Classic ethnography included in the action paradigm allowed for creating a new quality in the form of action ethnography. The analysis of research material collected through actions involving young people were focused on the following questions: Is school a place of personal development for young people? Is it a place for the development of subject knowledge, knowledge about oneself, or a peer interaction area? The results of the analysis lead the following hypotheses: according to students, school is not a place for personal development. It is only a disagreeable chore, which is best described by the metaphor of “the waiting room”. In fact, middle school is a waiting room on the road to real life, which is adulthood.
