This article is a review based on a literature review. Its aim is to demonstrate that the Other– the child – co-creates the mother’s identity. Thus, the article argues that the child, as the Other, serves as one of the key points of reference in the process of constructing and reconstructing the mother’s identity. For at the root of identity lie personal relationships and bonds with the Other. For the mother, the relationship with her child is the foundation of her motherhood, which is not merely a space for care and the fulfillment of socially defined roles, but also a realm of intense biographical experiences. Through biographical learning, the mother acquires knowledge about herself and the world by interpreting her own life experiences and incorporating them into her biographical narrative. The analyses indicate that a mother’s identity is not a state achieved once and for all, but an individual process constantly shaped in a dialogical relationship with the child, who is not only a participant in everyday family life but also a significant the Other.
