The aim of this article is to demonstrate the research value of correspondence preserved in the archival legacies of scholars and scholarly societies. The analysis focuses on letters forming part of the legacy of Stanisław Tync (held in the Archives of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw) and the correspondence of Stanisław Łempicki (housed in the Manuscripts Department of the Jagiellonian Library). The majority of the correspondents were scholars associated with two schools of thought in the history of education: the school of Stanisław Łempicki and the school of Stanisław Kot.
The study seeks to answer the following questions: (1) What are the characteristic features of the correspondence under analysis? (2) What information can be derived from the letters to reconstruct the scholarly biography of the individual whose correspondence is being examined? (3) What information do the letters provide for reconstructing the academic lives of other individuals who formed part of the scholarly milieu of a given period?
The analysis of the correspondence reveals that letters offer valuable insights into the academic trajectories of representatives of a given discipline or subdiscipline. In the case of correspondence concerning primarily historians of education, the letters make it possible to discern their modes of scholarly work, patterns of cooperation with other researchers, and their status within the academic community. As a form of ego-document, thesematerialspresent a different picture of the scholarly lives of historians of education from that reconstructed on the basis of official sources.
