The First Lecturers of the State Institute of Special Pedagogy

The establishment of the State Institute of Special Pedagogy (SISP) in Warsaw in 1922 provided an opportunity to train special school teachers. Maria Grzegorzewska, the Institute’s first director, aimed to select teaching staff who would guarantee comprehensive preparation of individuals interested in working with children with disabilities. When recommending candidates to the ministry, Grzegorzewska prioritized individuals with not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience and expertise in their respective fields.
This article aims to profile four SISP lecturers who taught subjects related to the education of children with intellectual disabilities: Władysław Sterling, Michał Wawrzynowski, Halina Jankowska, and Witold Łuniewski. In researching this article, methods typical of the history of education and social sciences were used. The achievements of these lecturers are described with particular emphasis on their work at SISP, utilizing materials preserved in the State Archives in Warsaw, Branch in Milanówek. Through the presentation of their activities, the article highlights the significance Grzegorzewska placed on teachers possessing extensive experience in working with children and youth.
