Socially “Engaged” Education:
Theoretical Assumptions and Practical Implications in the Concept of Civic Education by José Ortega y Gasset

The dynamics of globalization, which we particularly observe in the last two decades, force far-reaching changes in the education process, and above all in academic education. The assumptions of the social theory developed by José Ortega y Gasset – one of the most versatile thinkers of the 20th century – are a valuable inspiration to address this type of issue.
The article uses the analytical and synthetic method of the literature on the subject. At the outset of the text the value of educating citizens at the personal and social level is analyzed, which, according to Ortega y Gasset, makes a significant contribution to building a democratic society. Then, among others, the ideas regarding the freedom understood as a key challenge for citizens’ education were analyzed in the light of the author’s political liberalism.
