This article analyzes cultural transmission mechanisms in Polish and Jewish families living in interwar Bialystok. The research focuses on comparing tradition transmission practices in both communities within the multicultural context of the city. The theoretical framework is based on Antonina Kłoskowska's concepts of cultural transmission and Pierre Bourdieu's cultural capital. The biographical method was applied, using thematic interviews conducted among thirty-seven respondents of Polish and Jewish origin born before World War II. The material underwent qualitative data analysis using coding procedures employed in grounded theory. Research results indicate the functioning of both grand “traditions”, consciously transmitted through educational and religious institutions, and “small traditions” unconsciously transmitted in everyday social life. The analyses confirm the family's crucial role as the primary center for religious and customary tradition transmission, as well as the significance of urban space as an area of cultural integration. Conclusions point to the complexity of cultural transmission processes in a multicultural environment, where various transmission mechanisms complemented each other, creating a shared cultural heritage among Bialystok residents that transcended ethnic and religious divisions. Research on cultural transmission in pre-war Bialystok families enables urgent documentation of accounts from the last living witnesses, creating a valuable archive for future generations. These research findings can serve as educational material supporting regional and intercultural education programs.
