The Importance of Religion in the Education of Youths in the Interwar Period

One of the significant challenges faced by the Polish authorities after regaining independence was the reconstruction and organization of education. The political and teaching communities debated the nature of schooling, advocating for either the creation of religious education or secular education, independent of the Church’s influence. An important issue in this dispute was not only who should have a decisive influence on the form of schooling, but also whether and to what extent religious education affects the upbringing of the younger generation.
The purpose of this article is to show the views of teachers on the importance of religion in the upbringing of children and young people. For this purpose, the author analyzed the sources, unpublished surveys conducted among teachers in the late 1920s by Zygmunt Kukulski, professor at the Catholic University of Lublin. A total of 289 questionnaires were filled out, which are now held in the collection of the University Library of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The analysis indicates that the vast majority of the surveyed teachers recognized the positive impact of the truths of faith, Christian morality, and religious practices on the upbringing of children and adolescents, seeing in these elements an excellent tool for shaping the characters of young people and preparing them to live independently and harmoniously in an ethnically and religiously diverse society.
