Industry Participation in Curriculum Development and in the preparation and implementation of study programs at Higher Learning Institutions in East Africa

Podstawową misją instytucji szkolnictwa wyższego jest kształcenie absolwentów posiadających pożądane umiejętności, które przyczynią się do rozwoju społeczno-ekonomicznego ich krajów. Jednakże w Afryce Wschodniej przemysł nie jest zadowolony z jakości absolwentów instytucji szkolnictwa wyższego. Podobny problem występuje w innych częściach świata, w tym w Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej. Problemem jest zatem ustalenie, czy instytucje w Afryce Wschodniej angażują przemysł w opracowywanie i realizację programów nauczania. Badanie miało na celu sprawdzenie jak instytucje szkolnictwa wyższego współpracują z przemysłem, aby zapewnić studentom odpowiednie umiejętności dostosowane do potrzeb rynku pracy. Dane ilościowe zebrano za pomocą ankiety internetowej przeprowadzonej wśród 350 członków kadry zarządzającej w 35 uniwersytetach z 7 krajów Afryki Wschodniej. Badanie wykazało, że instytucje szkolnictwa wyższego we Wspólnocie Afryki Wschodniej miały powiązania z przemysłem, ale ograniczały się one głównie do pisemnych umów, ale z niewielką liczbą konkretnych działań. Respondenci (31%) twierdzili, że przemysł był zaangażowany w opracowywanie programów nauczania. Instytucje szkolnictwa wyższego powinny wzmacniać praktyczne partnerstwa z przemysłem poprzez ustanawianie formalnych mechanizmów, takich jak biura odpowiedzialne za powiązania z przemysłem i regularne fora. Instytucje te powinny w szczególności angażować przemysł we wszystkie etapy opracowywania programów nauczania oraz w działania związane z ich realizacją.
