Theology for Psychology, Psychology for Theology. Towards an Integration of Perspectives

Abstract

The article addresses the relationship between theology and psychology, emphasizing the possibility and necessity of integrating both perspectives. Theology, oriented toward reflection on meaning, transcendence, and the human relationship with God, contributes to psychology by introducing the spiritual dimension and ultimate questions that cannot be captured through empirical methods. Psychology, in turn, by analyzing mental processes and behavioral mechanisms, provides tools for a deeper understanding of religious experience and spiritual life.

The paper discusses the contribution of theology to psychology as well as the significance of psychology for theological reflection. It highlights that integration does not imply abandoning the distinctiveness of either discipline but rather opening space for dialogue and mutual enrichment. Particular attention is given to the practical implications of such cooperation—in pastoral care, psychotherapy, and education—where a holistic vision of the human being, understood as a unity of body, psyche, and spirit, proves to be especially important.

The authors argue that, in the face of contemporary cultural challenges and reductionist tendencies in the human sciences, dialogue between theology and psychology is not merely a theoretical postulate but a necessity for the integral development of the human person. Theology for psychology and psychology for theology together offer new paths of research and practice aimed at a fuller understanding and support of the human being.
