Abstract

Liturgy: A Lasting Challenge to Theological Method?

Having overcome the era in which the liturgy was considered merely a locus theologicus, in light of the
conciliar indications of Sacrosanctum Concilium and Optatam Totius (and of subsequent documents), the liturgy constitutes a crucial chapter in offering a theological synthesis within the vast horizon of theological content and language. Once knowledge of the
foundations and scope of  liturgical theology has been acquired, it is essential to engage
with the context of its research, starting from the epistemological framework within which reflection is articulated. This leads to important consequences for a comprehensive theological method: a method that has the courage to overcome fragmentation in favor
of a synthesising perspective in which the most diverse languages and fields of research find a common ground, as envisioned in Optatam totius and further explored, albeit from a different perspective, in Fides et ratio and in more recent magisterial documents.
