The passage from the Book of Nehemiah (Ne 8:1–12) reflects the practice of the Jewish community that returned from exile in Babylon, and researchers link it to the beginnings of the synagogue and the reading of scriptures. The presented historical, cultural and theological study addresses the following questions: Who reads the Book of the Law of Moses? Where is it read? What is meant by the expression ‘the Book of the Law of Moses’? What was it read from? When was this reading carried out? How was it read? The answers to these questions bring the reader closer to understanding the current state of knowledge about the ancient practice of proclaiming the word of God and the theology of the word of God.
