The Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Religious Education

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly through the widespread availability of numerous free chatbot platforms, is emerging as a valuable tool for teachers of Religious Education. This article explores the question of how artificial intelligence can be utilized in the Religious Education classroom, and what changes in pedagogical approaches might be anticipated as its use expands, particularly in light of the teaching of the Catholic Church. The study adopts a synthetic approach and is structured into three main sections. The first part of the text outlines the stance of the Catholic Church on artificial intelligence, with a focus on its implications for the field of education. The second examines the potential applications of AI as a tool to support the work of RE teachers. The third section discusses the challenges and risks associated with AI in Religious Education, emphasizing the importance of fostering ethical and responsible use among students. The article concludes with a summary and a bibliography.
