This paper elaborates upon the origin of the evolutionary paradigm in Western philosophy and culture that was introduced by Charles Darwin in the mid-19th century. Darwin, however, was not the first author to propose the evolutionary origin of species as there had been several significant attempts made by philosophers dating back to the early modern period. This paper presents the dichotomy between Christian creationism and modern evolutionism and explains how the latter originated as a worldview rather than one specific theory of nature.
