The article analyses the title of Baldwin I, the king of Jerusalem between 1100 and 1118. Based on a corpus of diplomatic sources, supplemented by sphragistic material and historiographical sources, the text presents the socio-political context of the formation of the royal title, forged during the conflict between the monarch and the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Dagobert of Pisa, over the rule of the Holy City. Hence, Jerusalem played a special role in Baldwin I’s title and his ideological programme.
