About us
The Journal Studia Źródłoznawcze. Commentationes has been published by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 1957. The Journal was established by the community of medievalists from Poznań and Warsaw, and for many years it was edited and published both in Poznań and Warsaw. The first Editorial Board included Aleksander Gieysztor, Gerard Labuda, and Brygida Kürbis, who was initially an assistant editor, and from the publication of the second volume (1958) – a member of the Board. The post of the assistant editor was held for a long time – from vol. 2 (1958) to vol. 31 (1987) – by Ryszard Walczak (d. 1989). He prepared for publication the double volume 32–33 for the year 1990. His deputy was Danuta Zydorek. Next, the post of assistant editor was taken up by Tomasz Jasiński (vol. 34 – 1993), with Danuta Zydorek as deputy secretary. Then Danuta Zydorek took up the position of assistant editor (vol. 35 – 1994, and vol. 36 – 1997).
In 1969 (vol. 14), the Editorial Board was joined by Ireneusz Ihnatowicz. Volumes 19 and 20 for the years 1974 and 1976 were prepared and edited by the Board with a new member Emanuel Rostworowski. In 1976 (vol. 21), the Board was joined by Ryszard Kiersnowski (to vol. 32 of 1990), and in 1990 – by Maria Koczerska, Stefan K. Kuczyński, and Józef Szymański.
Since 2000 (vol. 37), the Journal has been published in Warsaw. At that time, the Editorial Board included: Zbigniew Dalewski, Maria Koczerska (editor), Stefan. K. Kuczyński (editor), and Marek Słoń (assistant editor, vols 37–46 – 2000–2009). In 2001 (vol. 39), the Board was joined by Maria Starnawska, in 2009 (vol. 47) by Piotr Węcowski. In 2009 and 2011–2012 (vols 47, 49–50), the post of assistant editor was held by Anna Salina. In 2011 (vol. 49), the Editorial Board was joined by Andrzej Rachuba (editor), in 2012 (vol. 50) by Marek D. Kowalski, and in 2016 (vol. 54) by Marcin Hlebionek. In 2016 (vol. 54) Jacek Adamczyk was the Journal’s assistant editor, while in 2010 (vol. 48), 2013–2015 and 2017–2019 (vols 51–53 and 55–57) it was Marta Piber-Zbieranowska who in 2020 joined the Editorial Board. In 2013–2022 (vols 51–60), the function of editorial assistant has been performed by Rafał Rutkowski. Since vol. 58 (2020) Piotr Węcowski is the second editor-in-chief (replacing Maria Koczerska), and the position of the board’s secretary is held by Hanna Rajfura. In 2021 (vol. 59), the Editorial Board was joined by Joanna Szady, and in 2024 (vol. 62) by Adrian Jusupović. Since that year, the function of editorial assistant is performed by Michał Słomski.
At present, the post of editor-in-chief is jointly held by Prof. Andrzej Rachuba (Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences) and Dr. hab. prof. UW Piotr Węcowski (Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw).
Principles of Peer Review
The peer review process is carried out in accordance with the rules presented in the publication 'Good Practices in Reviewing Procedures in Science' (Dobre praktyki w procedurach recenzyjnych w nauce) published in Warsaw in 2011.
- By submitting their text, the authors consent to the review process.
- Articles are formally assessed by the Editorial Board within 30 days of being received. Approved texts are sent for review. They are assessed by two external reviewers from the research field consistent with the subject of the study, who are not members of the Journal’s Editorial Staff.
- The reviewers are selected by the Journal’s Editorial Board.
- Reviews are in writing. The review template is available on the Journal’s website.
- Articles are not sent to reviewers from the author’s affiliate institution.
- The Journal uses double-blind review: reviewer doesn’t know the identity of the author, and vice-versa.
- The author is always informed about the results of the review.
- Reviewers evaluate the text within 60 days.
- The review containing critical comments and suggestions is sent by the Editor-in-Chief to the author who is obliged to make the required corrections.
- The author has 30 days to make corrections and submit the final text to the Editors.
- After corrections, if their scope was significant, the article may be returned to the reviewer for approval.
- The final decision to publish an article is made by the editors-in-chief in consultation with the other members of the editorial board.
- If the review contains criticism and suggestions for changes, the author shall make the required corrections or shall comment on them if he does not agree with their validity. The editors reserve the right to suggest corrections based on their own or the reviewers' opinions. The final decision on publication depends on acceptance of these corrections by the author.
- In exceptional cases, where the author does not accept reviewers’ ratings, the article might be withdrawn on its author’s request.
- After accepting an article for publication, the text undergoes substantive editing, language editing and proofreading.

This is an open access journal (under CC-BY-ND licence), which means that all content is freely available without charge to the users and their institutions. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles in this Journal without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author, under the following terms:
- Attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
- No Derivatives – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.
