The paper addresses the issue of explaining and translating the complex notion of pain on the basis of The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis (1940) and its two Polish and two Spanish translations created in the 20th and the 21st centuries. The intertwining of temporal, stylistic, semantic, and cognitive factors plays a crucial role in the comparative analysis of the original text and its four translations. The theoretical, cultural, and methodological underpinnings are presented prior to the analysis proper and focus on the issues of the (in-)expressibility of pain in/via language, pain and culture, pain and translation, and onomasiological ‘labels’ of pain. All these considerations are related to the ensuing empirical study. The analysis at hand is divided into two parts – a shorter quantitative one (in which I deal with the distribution of lexical ‘pain labels’ in five texts under scrutiny) and a more extensive qualitative one (in which I elaborate on various aspects of translating the ‘pain language’ across the three languages involved). The emergent conclusions seem to confirm the thesis posed at the beginning of the paper that temporal, lexico-semantic, stylistic, and even idiosyncratic and cultural, factors converge at the interface of the original text and its translations, something that results in highlighting numerous shades and nuances stemming from them.References
