Politics is an inherent part of, understood in a broader sense, the daily life culture of every human being. As it is deeply rooted in the specific context, the subject matter of political translation is undoubtedly a challenge for the translator when it regards shaping mutual perception of different nations. The article presents modifications in the French translation of the first autobiography of Lech Wałęsa A Way of Hope that were introduced as a result of publishing strategies and translation decisions. The observed shifts model the Polish reality of the communist period in different ways but, above all, they strongly modify the idiolect of the author, adjusting it to the ideas held by the target reader in terms of the language and image of this politician functioning in the French society.
