Stigma of Epilepsy and Ability to Work – Case Study

Abstract

Background. Epilepsyaffects manypeoplewho could notdeal with itin everyday life. The aim of this studyis to presenta positivecase ofa manwho, despite thestigmaof epilepsywas successfulprofessionaland has overcomedifficulties.
Case study. The case study concerns the 40 year-old man suffering from epilepsy since the age of 16. He dealt with the difficulties of life on the chronic disease, taking medications regularly and watching out for the next attack and accepting it as the norm. But he is the man who has taken the fight against disease, has not been stigmatized. In addition, earned college degrees, and today is a successful IT professional.
Discussion. Epilepsyis a chronic disease, the treatment lasts formany years.Despite thereduction ofthe doseof drugsseizures andthe patientstillsuffersthe stigmaof the disease.Adverse impactof epilepsyon the socialfunctioning ofpatientsis associatedwith worse outcomesin learning, difficulties in social interaction, and thenfind a job andthe inabilityto drive.
Conclusions. With the right attitude of the patient's attitude and persistence in spite of the difficulties can and stigmatization of the disease which is epilepsy succeed educational and life satisfaction. (PNN 2013;2(1):33-36)
