Ethnographic “Eastern Studies” as a Practice of Orientalization. Critical perspective

This article aims to elucidate selected aspects of academic practice within the framework of the so-called Eastern Studies in Poland after 1989. I draw on my own research experience, as well as on institutional examples and popularization projects in the field of “Eastern” studies. Reflecting critically on my experience as a teacher in Lithuania and Ukraine in the last decade of the twentieth century, alongside specific institutional solutions, I am questioning the extent to which orientalizing practices were/are employed. The main question I raise is whether “Eastern” studies were as innocent as they appeared to me over
30 years ago. Before analysing specific examples, I present theoretical inspirations and some selected historical aspects. My article is not intended to provide a comprehensive critical analysis of “Eastern Studies” as a whole; it focuses on only a few selected aspects.
