Abstract

A superfruit is a fruit that is known to have exceptionally high levels of nutrients, antioxidants and potential health benefits. Dark Aronia berries rank as number one among dozens of fruits, tested for the antioxidant capacity, are called “superberries”. The presence of high amounts of anthocyanins, procyanidins, tannins and chlorogenic acids is a unique feature of aronia. Biologically active compounds present in the berries exhibit anti-inflammation, antimicrobial, antiviral activities and may support recovery ftaer COVID-19. They are valuable in the prevention and dietary therapy of diseases such as cardiovascular, neurodegenerative or diabetes. The innovative aronia products such as juice, syrup, wine or powdered extracts should be standardized.
