Shea tree Vitellaria paradoxa is a plant that belongs to Sapotaceae family and is found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has many uses but it is best known for the fat obtained from its fruit. The fat is called shea butter and is used, inter alia, as a cosmetic substance. Due to the presence of numerous biologically active substances, shea butter has a number of beneficial properties. It has a positive effect on the skin and its appendages, having a moisturizing, protective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. Shea butter is used in the production of cosmetics for various purposes – for skincare, haircare and nail care – as well as medicinal products. On the market there is a wide range of manufacturers offering cosmetics with shea butter in the composition. This review work presents up-to-date information on the Vitellaria paradoxa species and as a source of valuable cosmetic raw material used in cosmetic preparations.
