Der Artikel analysiert das Konzil von Blachernai (1351) als einen konstitutiven Moment in der Geschichte der orthodoxen Kirche und vergleicht es mit den früheren ökumenischen Konzilien von Nicäa (325) und Chalcedon (451). Im ersten Teil werden der historische Kontext, der Verlauf und die Folgen der Konzilien von Nicäa und Chalcedon dargestellt, die die trinitarische Ontologie und die christologische Definition geprägt haben. Der zweite Teil behandelt den hesychastischen Streit und die Lehre des Gregorios Palamas, deren normative Form das Konzil von Blachernai annahm, indem es die Unterscheidung zwischen Gottes Wesen und Energien festlegte. Der dritte Teil zeigt den Vergleich der drei konstitutiven Momente: des ontologischen (Nicäa), des christologischen (Chalcedon) und des mystagogischen (Blachernai). Im Schluss wird die These aufgestellt, dass Nicäa und Chalcedon das universale Christentum konstituieren, während Blachernai die orthodoxe Identität konstituieren und eine Dogmatisierung der geistlichen und mystischen Erfahrung bieten.
