Abstract

The basic concept that pupils need to learn in astronomy education is the shape of the Earth. This concept is abstract because children need to go beyond what they see every day to construct it. Research shows that many students in early childhood education do not use this concept when explaining, among other things, the location of people on Earth (Jelinek 2020). The research conducted aimed to test the effectiveness of an educational intervention in helping children build the concept of the shape of the Earth. The EARTH2 test was used in the study. Forty-seven pupils from the first and second grades of primary school were included in the study. The research showed that (a) pupils who participated in astronomy education classes achieved higher scores after the classes. (b) Analysis of the questions asked by the children during the intervention showed that they went far beyond the astronomy program at school. (c) It also emerged that pupils showed concern about threatening phenomena from space.
