Subordination or Fertile Community of Life? A Few Words on the Marital Vocation of a Man and a Woman in the Light of Ephesians 5:21–33

The author analyses Ephesians 5:21–33 and asks about the essence of the marital vocation. The exegesis of Ephesians 5:21–33 leads the author to the conclusion that two fundamental aspects of the marital relationship are highlighted in the text: reciprocity (relationality) and fertility. Marriage is seen as a fruitful community or covenant of love. The woman and the man are given a model for their life in Christ, who in the saving event “loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” Christ’s union with the Church leads to the “begetting” of new children of God. Just as the Church saves herself by giving birth to new members of the new united humanity, so too the woman (the husband’s body, the counterpart of the Church) saves herself by giving birth to children who are the fruit of the profound and mutual union of husband and wife.
