The purpose of this article is to examine the presence of the Ethiopian Church in the Holy Land. Ethiopia is one of the most ancient civilizations in the world. Its rich cultural heritage is inseparably tied to the Christian tradition. It must be noted that there is an ancient documentation on the Ethiopian presence in Jerusalem. It exists also a literature concerning Ethiopia and people with dark skin. Then the medieval era is analyzed until the fall of the Ottoman Empire. As a distinguishable community the Ethiopians in the Holy Land are attested at least from the 13th century. The small community was founded by Ethiopian pilgrims in Jerusalem. At the beginning of the 19th century, Ethiopian monks were mainly present in Deir es-Sultan monastery, which they shared with Coptic monks. However, in the middle of that century, Ethiopian monks came into conflict with the Coptic community concerning the occupation and the management of this monastery. The conflict concerning the property lasts until today. The complex of places in the possession of Ethiopian Church in Jerusalem and elsewhere is still the focal point and spiritual center for the pilgrimages of this African Church to the Holy Land.
