In the article, the short historical review on the Assyrians is presented, emphasizing the period of the flourishing Christian civilization of the East. The characteristics of the Assyrian people show on the one hand firm ties with the ancient traditions (especially the Aramaic language still spoken), and on the other hand their respect towards the foreign cultures. Both characteristics helped Assyrians to bring forth the Christian values and civilization to various people. The Assyrians highly contributed to the evangelization of the entire Orient, to the development of monastic life, culture and science, of important impact on the Western civilization and Church. Today’s situation poses threat on the very existence of the Assyrians along with the Oriental Christianity they represent, and forces us to learn the lessons and to undertake appropriate actions.References
