the Cecilian Movement, sacred music, fr. Bronisław MaryańskiAbstract
The Cecilian Movement was established Bavaria in 19th century in order to improve the quality of performance of the sacral music. The Movement’s ideas reached Polish territories quite soon. Father Bronisław Maryański was among the most reputable advocates for improvement of the sacral music. In 1891 he published a first issue of “A Guide for Rural Organists ”, which was later renamed into “A Yearbook for Rural Organists”. The journal was meant to help church musicians. The author of this article presents the circumstances in which the Yearbook was established as well as discusses its main contents. The article is based on the issues of the journal, which were believed to have been lost. Topics raised in these issues focus on improving skills and widening knowledge essential to perform the organist duties. Thus, these topics fit into the mainstream of the church literature of the time. Father Maryański’s publications were certainly helpful, though today it is still difficult to determine with certainty their scope and influence. Nevertheless, because of his pioneer efforts to assist organists with their job, Father Maryański should be acknowledged in the history of church music in Poland.
