Oczekiwania mesjańskie w biblijnym Izraelu

W czasach Jezusa wyczekiwanie rozbudzało nastroje antyrzymskie i nacjonalistyczne. Najsilniej przejawiały się one w ruchu zelotów („gorliwych”), którego radykalne skrzydło stanowili „sykaryjczycy”, gotowi do wojny, która miałaby przyspieszyć nadejście Mesjasza. Patriotyzm zelotów miał więc silne podłoże religijne. Bóg był jedynym królem narodu, który sobie wybrał; jedynym możliwym królestwem Bożym. Ukute przez nich hasło: „żadnego władcy prócz Boga”, nie oznaczało jednak anarchii. Byli gotowi uznać swoich władców jako reprezentantów władzy boskiej, jednak nie Rzymian.
