Abstract

It is generally acknowledged that in the nineteenth century the pope most deeply engaged in the development of the cult of Saint Joseph was Blessed Pius IX. Nevertheless, his successor, Leo XIII, also held this subject close to his heart. Less than a month after his election to the See of Peter, he entrusted his pontificate to Saint Joseph. Pope Leo XIII is the author of the only encyclical in the history of the Church dedicated entirely to Saint Joseph. Moreover, his contribution to Josephology is expressed through the composition of a popular prayer to Saint Joseph, a series of liturgical decisions and reforms, and the approval of the Scapular of Saint Joseph.
