Marcionism and Supersessionism

In theological debates, Marcionism is often confused with supersessionism. This confusion is fueled by ambiguity regarding the nature of “supersessionism” itself—that is, whether it is a serious analytical category or rather an emphatic term denoting a morally flawed theology of Judaism. This article attempts to do justice to supersessionism as a traditionally Christian theology of Judaism deeply rooted in Church tradition. This makes it possible to clearly distinguish supersessionism from Marcionism and to demonstrate that it constitutes an orthodox alternative to Marcion’s doctrine within the scope of the Christian theology of Judaism.
