Abstract

This article compares Sethian Gnosticism and Mandaeism as two structurally distinct anthropologies of revelation. In the Sethian tradition, revelation is an act of ontological recognition: the revealer discloses to the recipient what the recipient already is: a nature that precedes the act of disclosure and makes it possible. In the Mandaean tradition, revelation takes the form of guidance: the revealer enters into a relationship that must be sustained through repeated ritual practice, and the soul's salvation depends on whether that relationship is maintained. The difference is not one of emphasis but of anthropological structure. The article argues that these two patterns – recognition and guidance – are not extinct historical options but live possibilities that any theology of revelation implicitly inhabits.
