What Was the 1968 Revolution for the Catholic Church? The Historical and Social Context of the Origin of the Encyclical Letter Humanae Vitae

The aim of this article is to analyse the political, historical and theological context in which Paul VI’s Encyclical Letter Humanae Vitae was issued, as well as the influence of the Reformation, French and Bolshevik revolutions on the moral transformations of the 1960s, commonly referred to as the sexual revolution. Each of these movements displays attempts to question traditional sexual morality and Christian anthropology. The contemporary dispute over religion calls for a deeper understanding of the nature of this revolution, since the debate on sexuality, marriage and the family may remain, in the coming decades, one of the main points of contention within the Roman Catholic Church.
