Liturgical Functions Resulting from the Reception of Ministries in the Documents of Ancient Synods (4th–6th Century)

The synods of antiquity addressed many aspects of Church life. While doctrinal matters were the primary focus, a number of canons also dealt with issues related to the liturgy and the clergy. This article analyzes the canons of synods held between the 4th and 6th centuries, both in the East and the West. It seeks information concerning the liturgical functions of those who had received liturgical ministries: doorkeepers (ostiarii), exorcists, lectors, acolytes, and subdeacons. This allows us to identify which of their liturgical duties were established by synodal decisions, as well as which of them remain in effect to this day.
