The Social Message of the Jubilee Year 2025

Abstract

This article examines the social message of the Jubilee Year 2025, drawing upon the teachings of Pope Francis as its primary source. With the experience of the Jubilee Year comes the development of individual pro-social attitudes such as patience and hospitality. Patience pertains to an awareness of the ultimate goal, that is, salvation amid various obstacles, with divine mercy serving to sustain the long-term efforts that are required in this regard. Hospitality, in turn, is characterized by selflessness in caring for strangers. The Pope emphasizes the necessity of addressing the migration crisis, noting that patience and hospitality are increasingly undermined by selfishness, materialism, and questioning of the historical perspective. The message of the Jubilee Year also extends beyond individual attitudes, with Pope Francis calling for greater efforts toward peace, which he in fact equates with social justice. The starting point for all peace-building processes is the recognition of the inviolability of personal dignity and human rights, and above all, of the right to life. Equitable relations between countries also involve the renunciation of violence, the pursuit of diplomatic dialogue, and the mitigation of inequalities arising from ecological debt. The hope expressed by Pope Francis—namely, the hope that social transformation guided by justice is feasible—possesses an element of realism and constitutes a response to the aspirations of contemporary humanity.
