New Challenges for the Laity in the 21st Century

The changing demographic conditions in the 21st century have an impact on the pastoral activity of the Church community. Faced with an ageing society and a decreasing number of priests, members of the Church are forced to reflect on the following question: “How are we to be the Church today?” The ministry of lay Catholics to the sick, the suffering and the elderly is a distinctive sign of our times that requires theological and pastoral reflection. In the future, the assistance of lay people to priests will be necessary on a broader scale, hence the need for the formation of lay people in preparation for this service.
