Human freedom has many names today. In different areas of life, it manifests itself as freedom of choice, existential freedom, prosopopoeial freedom, socio-political freedom, and religious freedom. Joseph Ratzinger–Benedict XVI proposes yet another understanding of human freedom, which consists in recognizing one’s createdness, that is, in regarding human life as a gift coming from God. Therefore, he argues for the “liberation” of such freedom, which in its dependence on the Creator takes the form of love. This truth is expressed in a triptych: the freedom of God himself, the freedom of sonship, and the freedom of man.
