Nisibis, the School of Nisibis, Assyrian writers, Middle AgesAbstract
The study outlines the city of Nisibis and the school that operated there, as well as the associated writers and their output. Hardly any Middle Eastern city played such a significant role in Christianity during the 4th–7th centuries as Nisibis did. St. James (†338), an active participant of the Council of Nicaea (325), and St. Ephrem (†373), the first and universally recognised Christian poet, were born in this city and worked there. The city’s thriving college educated dozens of philosophers and men of letters, including 10 patriarchs and 60 bishops, and already in the 5th century, Nisibis was called ܐܶܡܳܐ ܕܝܽܘܠܦܳܢ̈ܐ Emma d-Yulpāne (Alma Mater).
The list of writers was compiled chronologically and is limited to the Assyrian Church only. The works written by these authors will make it possible to form an opinion on the subject matter, reflecting the situation of the spiritual life not only of the members of the Clergy but also of the countryside and rural communities. Furthermore, it will be shown what role they played in diplomacy and in intercultural dialogue, acting as a bridge between Byzantium and Persia.
