Abstract

This article examines and explores in more depth the similarities between Jerome’s Vita S. Pauli monachi Thebaei and the Vita S. Mariae Aegyptiacae (a work once attributed to Sophronius of Jerusalem and now to Pseudo-Sophronius), which are significant due to a number of characteristics: firstly, because of the protagonists of whom they treat, Paul of Thebes and Maria of Egypt, considered to be the greatest representatives of this mode of ascetic life; secondly, because of the date of composition, which places both works among the oldest literary legacy of this genre, and therefore also because of the influence they had on the later tradition, both practical and literary; and finally, because of the length of the two works, which makes it possible to develop and better configure the narrative structure and style of this genre.
