The purpose of this article is to present sin in the lives of the clergy and the penitential practices recorded in the oldest Irish penitential books from the fifth and sixth centuries. The repetitive penance for sins committed by the clergy was born in this period and place. The article discusses the various categories of sins and the corresponding penalties. The main categories of sins and the related penances concerned abuses against God’s worship, especially the Eucharist and prayer, chastity and the Greatest Commandment. A study of these documents showed that the purpose of true repentance was to convert the heart. From the beginning of her existence, the Church in Ireland was concerned about the sanctity of the lives of the clergy and, therefore, strongly condemned all sins committed by them, especially the sins of the profanation of the Eucharist, impurity, drunkenness, murder and theft. After committing a sin, a member of the clergy who wished to return to his ministry had to undergo severe penance. Rejection of penance was tantamount to dismissal from the clerical state and exile from the homeland. Despite the severity of the penance, one can see in the oldest Irish penitential books the great concern of the Church for the salvation of every human being and trust in God’s mercy.
