The translator and the landscape of death: on the Polish translation of „Il Fumo di Birkenau” by Liana Millu

„Il Fumo di Birkenau” is based on author’s experiences in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The first, and the only Polish translation appeared after the author’s death in 2007. For Millu, the landscape of the camp, as well as its surroundings, is a place of an unjustified suffering. The paper discusses the role of the translator in recreating the descriptions of landscape. The purpose of the research is to identify the presence of their traces and to determine their role as a means of mediating between the two images of nature.
