Viva la libertà, traditional features of political language, the Italian left party, Roberto Andò, Il trono vuotoAbstract
The article suggests a comparison between the traditional features of political language, especially of the Italian left party, and those represented in the movie Viva la libertà (by Roberto Andò, 2013), based on the novel Il trono vuoto written by Andò himself, in which the protagonist is an imaginary, but not so unreal, leader of the main left party. With the help of the literary and stylistic use of the double (the main characters are actually twin brothers), the author shows the disorientation of the Left: the twin brother, affected by a bipolar disturb, replaces the leader of the party without anyone being aware of it and seems to succeed in restoring the party, which is about to collapse, thanks to his behavior and way of speaking that shock everybody, especially closest collaborators. This movie is a harsh criticism to the Italian Left which, in the last years, could not preserve its identity, losing contact with its language and ways of communication as well and often copying the models and stereotypes of rightist language; this movie is also a disruptive and imaginative proposal, which, thanks to its unsettling and new linguistic choices, expresses the real and required need, for many Left voters, of a change in the rules of political communication.
