Abstract

The main objective of the article is the analysis of magical aspects in “commedie erudite” from the 1st half of the 16th century, deemed as exemplary for the comical genre of the Renaissance, due to their notoriety and relevance for the history of the genre. An insight into Bibbiena’s La Calandria proposes an observation of two forms of charlatanism: pseudo-magical jokes inspired by Boccaccio, and the introduction of a mage-vagabond, or else a necromancer Ruffo. The former, though undoubtedly brilliant, consist merely of a mockery of a fool, whereas the latter represents an interesting innovation, which finds its expansion in Negromante, where Ariosto develops the mage from a secondary character into a key protagonist. Finally, an analysis of all the aspects mentioned hopefully points out common characteristics of magical rites in comedies, such as their fraudulent nature, moralistic significance and the bond with sexual aspects within the plots.
