The paper presents a history of the western translation theories through the magnifying glass of Borges’ reading. In particular, it examines Borges’ short story Pierre Menard, autor del Quijote as a sort of critical essay about ’translation’. Pierre Menard seems to be a clever literary invention used to pinpoint the varieties of approach to the practice (and theory) of translation through history.
