The Author analyses the process of unifi cation of Italy in the period 1860-1861 and the crucial role of the King Charles Albert who promulgated the Fundamental Statute of the Kingdom of Sardinia on the 4th of March, 1848. This paper is also devoted to the origin and the text of this Statute which was the legal basis on which the Kingdom of Italy was established. The Author pays special attention to the relations between the King and the Council of Ministers, the relations in the King’s government and to the practice of applying the Statute.
