The article focuses on how the memory of the fallen in the Great War was used by those who initiated the construction of the churches in Opava in Silesia and Giżycko in East Prussia. After discussing the architecture, decorations and public rituals, an analysis of the identity discourses that set the context for the creation of the edifices is presented and the ways of managing the symbolic capital by the Catholic elites is interpreted.
