This article aims to shed light on the lesser-known international activities of Archibald C. Coolidge. He was a historian and a professor at Harvard University, known for his pioneering research on the history of Russia in the USA. He was also a member of The Inquiry and The Council on Foreign Relations, and served as the longtime editor of Foreign Affairs. This article focuses on his two missions on behalf of the State Department: one to gather information about Russia (April–October 1918) and the other about the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy (December 1918 – May 1919). Through an analysis of the objectives, conduct, and results of these missions, the text presents an American cognitive perspective on the region. The research is based on printed American documents, letters, memoirs, and notes.
