About the Journal

About us

The Journal was established in 1963. Its first Editor-in-Chief was the professor of the University of Warsaw and the head of the Department of History of European Socialist Countries at the IH PAN, Rafał Gerber. After many years, the Department was transformed into the Department of History of the 19th- and 20th-Century Europe. Currently, it functions as the Section for the History of Eastern Europe and the Empires of the 19th and 20th Centuries within the structures of the Department of the History of the 20th Century. The next Editors-in-Chief were Professors Janusz Żarnowski, Piotr Łossowski, Marek Kazimierz Kamiński, and Andrzej Nowak. Now, the Journal is edited by the editorial team under prof. Daniel Boćkowski; its Editorial Board is made up of the eminent world scholars such as Professors Kimitaka Matsuzato, Timothy Snyder, Eric Jacobson, Darius Staliunas. The member of the Board was also Richard Pipes, who died in 2018.

The first number was published in 1965 under the title of The USSR and Central European History Research. In 1992, the title was changed to Studies into the History of Russia and Central-Eastern Europe.

In previous years, the Studies into the History of Russia and Central-Eastern Europe carried out programmes financed by the ministry responsible for science, aimed at increasing the standard of the Journal and popularise research results, especially in English. Currently, it is a two-year project “Development for Scientific Journals” of the Ministry of Education and Science. In recent years, the Journal has also been covered by the Support for Scientific Journals programme of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the National Program for the Development of Humanities.

According to the current list of scientific journals and peer-reviewed materials from international conferences prepared by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, contributions to Studies into the History of Russia and Central-Eastern Europe are awarded 100 points.

Focus and Scope

The Journal is devoted to the widely understood history of East and Central Europe, the USSR and Russia in the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. We also publish the articles and studies on the relationship of this region with other countries of the world, and on the history of empires. We are also interested in research into the fields of social and cultural sciences, as well as in the articles combining research methods of several disciplines, including these using the most recent achievements in the humanities and social sciences.

Scientific disciplines represented in the Journal cover: history, international relations, art sciences, sciences of culture and religion, security sciences, social communication and media sciences, politics and administration sciences, sociological sciences, film and theatre arts.

Editorial Policies

By submitting their text, the authors guarantee that they have written the original scientific work on their own, and all fragments of other authors’ works have been properly cited. Plagiarism in all its forms is unethical and will be made public by the editors. We expect the typescripts to be the result of original research, unpublished, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

All texts submitted for publication in “Studia z dziejów Rosji i Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej” are checked for potential plagiarism using the Antiplagiarism System service provided by Plagiat.pl.

Typescripts with disclosed ghostwriting will be rejected by the editors. Authorship should be limited only to those persons who made a significant contribution either to the conception, or analysis and interpretation of the data. All those who have made a significant contribution should be listed as co-authors.

Principles of Peer Review

The peer review process is carried out in accordance with the rules presented in the publication Good Practices in Reviewing Procedures in Science (Dobre praktyki w procedurach recenzyjnych w nauce) published in Warsaw in 2011.

  • By submitting their text, the authors consent to the review process.
  • Articles are formally assessed by the Editorial Board within 30 days of being received. Approved texts are sent for review. They are always assessed by two external reviewers from the research field consistent with the subject of the study, who are not members of the Journal’s Editorial Staff.
  • The reviewers are selected by the Journal’s Editorial Board.
  • Reviews are in writing. The review template is available on the Journal’s website.
  • In the case of texts written in a foreign language, at least one of the reviewers is affiliated with a foreign institution from a country other than the author’s nationality.
  • Articles are not sent to reviewers from the author’s affiliate institution.
  • The Journal uses double-blind review: reviewer doesn’t know the identity of the author, and vice-versa.
  • An article is assigned a code that identifies it at a later stage in the peer-review process. The author is always informed about the results of the review.
  • Reviewers evaluate the text within 60 days.
  • The review containing critical comments and suggestions is sent by the Editor-in-Chief to the author who is obliged to make the required corrections.
  • The author has 30 days to make corrections and submit the final text to the Editors.
  • After corrections, if their scope was significant, the article may be returned to the reviewer for approval.
  • The final decision to publish an article is made by the Editor-in-Chief. An article to be publish has to receive two positive reviews.
  • A polemic between the author and the reviewer is allowed (in the case of critical comments of the reviewer regarding substantive issues).
  • In exceptional cases, where the author does not accept reviewers’ ratings, the article might be withdrawn on its author’s request.
  • The list of reviewers cooperating with the editorial office is published on the Journal’s website.

The institution employing the author will also be informed about this fact.
  • In justified cases, the Editorial Board may request a declaration of the author’s/authors’ contribution in accordance with the principles of the ghostwriting firewall.
  • Authors may be asked to submit a declaration on the sources of financial means to finance the publication, contribution from research institutions, associations and other entities (financial disclosure).

6) The authors are notified by e-mail about the acceptance of their article for publication.

7) If there is a need to correct or supplement the submitted text in accordance with the reviewers’ suggestions, the author has 21 days starting from the date of sending the comments of the reviewer or the editor. Failure to correct the text within the this time means that it will be published in the following issue.

8) Texts for author’s correction are sent in a PDF file. Any comments should be included in the form of an attached errata containing information about noticed errors. The author can also print the file he was sent, make a correction on the paper, and then send it to the editorial office. Revised texts are due by a certain deadline. Texts not received within this time will be published in their original form (with possible errors).

  • affiliation – in the form required by the employing institution (in other cases, we provide the name of the city);
  • title of the article in Polish and English;
  • outline of the content in Polish (400–700 characters) and in English – a brief overview of the content of the article;
  • keywords in Polish and English – 5–7 words or phrases;

  • It is compulsory to provide the full address of your primary workplace and a valid e-mail address. This is the data necessary for indexing.

The outline of the content, keywords and abstract may be translated by the Editorial Staff during the preparation of the volume for publication, however, the materials sent by the author must contain all elements in Polish.

10) Structure of review articles, reviews and review notes:

  • Review articles: name and surname of the author (together with the ORCID number and affiliation) and the title of the review article are to be given at the beginning of the text;
  • Reviews: the name and surname of the author (with the ORCID number) should be provided under the text of the review;
