Developing dictionary use skills in translator trainees in view of lexicography and translator training

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the relation between dictionary use and translation pedagogy. By discussing relevant aspects of the theories of lexicography and translation in respect of dictionary use (Kussmaul 1995; Tarp 2004, 2008) and by presenting the results of major research into the said field (Atkins and Varantola 2008), the author emphasises the necessity of developing dictionary use skills in trainee translators, which will enable them to better decode source texts and render their meaning in the target language. Moreover, the paper provides a model of efficient instruction into dictionary use (Roberts 1992). The author extends Atkins and Varnatola’s famous statement that effective dictionary use can be improved either by improving the dictionary itself or the user (2008: 337) by adding that ‘improving’ translation teachers is yet another key to success in this regard as trainers often neglect the duty to offer instruction in dictionary use to their students. The question of cooperation between translators and lexicographers is also addressed herein.References
